Show Schedual in Planning

I will hopefully be in the Trocaire show again this fall.

How ever, this brings up the question of when I should look into registering with show. The answer turns out to be very early in the year. Even for the fall shows most applications need to be sent in in the beginning of the year.

For three that I found the deadline was March 1st. They are juried shows and have hefty fees. So while this year is not the year for them I should have enough saved up to try for next year. I should also have a booth set up and a tent.

Another one that I am thinking about has a dead line of May 1ts. I sent in a request for information so I hope I will hear from them before the deadline. It is a very local show in my town and while I probably wold not sell a lot, but I would get my name out there.

Searching for a Mentor

I want one not because I want to learn more about making jewelry, but so I can learn to sell it.

I would love to work with another jewelry seller at one of their shows to learn the ropes a little. Watch and learn how they talk to their customers and such. How they set things up and not over crowd their booth. My list could go on forever.

I really wish I could find someone localy to sit with and help watch their booth.

I think I will be asking my aunt about doing this with her out in Michigan one day when we are visiting. At least if I royally screw something up she won't totally flip out at me. Mock me afterwords yes, but that's just how family is. Actuly, maby she could find a show that we could do together and be set up next to each other. that might actuly work better.

Hmm.. I think I need to call my aunt. :3

First Run of Ads

So, I'm posting ads with Project Wonderful for a little bit. Trying to drum up a little more attention for my Etsy store. Once I get a good idea of the cost's and advantages then I might post ads on some of the more popular sites that I know of.

Facebook is far too expensive for me to advertise on. They want $2 or more for a click. That is not in my budget. Maybe if I had the money I would try it for a week, but that is just far too expensive to me.

I will be posting more items and their descriptions later this week. I feel like I am spamming my own blog but some people find it easier then they find my store. I'm trying to update more here & my Facebook Page with real news. I just wish I had some.

Copper Rings & Updates

So, my small back log of posts dwindled down to nothing. I will be setting more up but for every other day.

The real news is I have made four rings. They each are clasping a faceted stone and look wonderful. Two have white topaz, one with a giant citrine and the last is a peridot. I made these free form because I didn't have anything to size the rings as I made them. But my tools are in the mail so I will be posting rings to my etsy store soon.

The next thing I will be getting will be thicker silver wire and I might look into getting some gold filled wire as well for making rings. Unfortunately the smaller copper wire bends. I am testing some easy hardening methods but I'm not sure how well they will work. I test how well they work by making a ring for my mom to wear to work and then see what she thinks.

Also, itty bitty anvils are very hard to work on/with. Just so you know.

My domain www.PhyrBeads.com is now pointing to my etsy store. My plan was to build a website some two years ago. I figure this is a much better use of the domain until I can make a site with Google. It's so nice that they can do almost every thing.

The Joys of a Chasing Hammer

If I had known how easy it was to texture and hammer silver and copper I would have been doing this from the start. I am in love with my chasing hammer.

When I first started making jewelry I didn't know what type of hammer to get. I tried valiantly to hammer some copper with a normal hammer & mallet on a piece of aluminum but... it's really didn't work. My dad thought it was funny and my mom told us not to break the table.

I asked my wonderful and crafty aunt and she laughed and told me to get a chasing hammer. As I searched it would seem that every site I went to was sold out. So I put it off.

Fast forward to 2 weekends ago.

I went to visit my crafty aunt (with my dad in tow) and the three of us went to her local insanely huge craft supply store. While I was off puttering around the selection of stone beads my dad wondered off on his own. It was a slow day at the shop so I wasn't too worried about him getting beat up by a little old lady for god knows what.

And guess what he finds? A chasing hammer. I guess he had been talking to my aunt/his sister about the wire wrapping looking fun. So he got a few things to try it and that night he happily hammered away for about 10min. After that he was was ok... here you go! And thus how I came to own it.

Last night I finally got around to testing it out. I love it.

My first pendant, while the learning experience, turned out very nice. I figured out a few things to Not Do and a few things that are not as easy as they looked. Also that I am low on silver wire.

I think I will be keeping my river stone & copper pendent and make more of them to post to my Etsy Shop. I will also be posting the other pendents that I have and will make this this week. After I take photos. I will also be updating all my photos so that you can actuly see the items and not just imagine them in the too dark pictures.

On Steampunk Jewelry

I understand that Steampunk is the new black on some parts of the internet. Most pieces need watch gears and such to give them the right feel. Not just glued on at random but in a nice artfull maner.

Unfortunately the prices for the gears have gone up because they are such a hot commodity. the larger gears are almost imposable to find at a reasonable rate. I'm going to try an locate some gears, vacuum tubes and old keys that are not going to make the price of the items skyrocket.

So for now I just have the small bottle pendent, but I can see what other parts I have and how I can mix them into a pendent or earrings.
